"Santa's Rally" Holiday Exhibition

December 6 - December 24, 2025

The holiday season has arrived, and we’re delighted to unveil our annual special exhibition. This year is particularly meaningful as we celebrate our very first holiday in our new location! With the gallery nearing its 40th anniversary next year, we’ve also given our holiday show a refreshing new title, transitioning from “Santa’s Chest” to “Santa’s Rally”.

New works from our artists continue to come in, and we’ve been joyfully arranging them into a festive display, though figuring out how to fit everything on the walls is a royal challenge! If you haven’t had a chance to visit our new space yet, we’d love to welcome you. Come see what’s new and we’re sure you’ll be delighted!

And if you’re not nearby, no worries! All artworks can be viewed on our website, and we ship worldwide. If you’re purchasing a piece as a Christmas gift, we’ll do everything we can to ensure it arrives on or before December 24th.

Josephine Fletcher Spotlight

November 29 - December 20, 2025

We are thrilled to announce our next Spotlight Show, dedicated entirely to the vibrant and evocative work of Josephine Fletcher (Josi), the beloved Salt Spring Island painter whose landscapes pulse with the wild beauty of the West Coast.

Josi’s paintings are a celebration of colour and light, born from her deep connection to the landscapes that surround her. Nurtured amid the artistic community of Hornby Island and now thriving on Salt Spring, her bold, painterly strokes evoke the transcendental spirit of nature: arbutus groves bending in the wind, sandstone shores kissed by the sea, and the fleeting glow of a full moon over Fulford Harbour. Influenced by the Fauves and the quiet power of Emily Carr, her work is both masterful and deeply personal, a love letter to the Gulf Islands she calls home.

Since Josi joined our gallery's roster in 2022, her bold, unapologetic paintings have sparked lively (and sometimes heated!) conversations among artists, collectors, and visitors alike. Far from shying away, we’ve welcomed the energy! I’m absolutely delighted to share that Josi has just been awarded one of the top honours from the 2025 Salt Spring National Art Prize (SSNAP): the prestigious Salon des Refusés Solo Exhibition Prize. This remarkable recognition is a thrilling reaffirmation of the vision, courage, and sheer talent that first drew us to Josi’s work, and that continues to captivate (and occasionally provoke) everyone who steps in front of her canvases.

Josi will be at the gallery on Saturday November 29 to meet and greet from 11am to 3pm. Whether you’re a longtime admirer of Josephine’s transcendent visions or discovering her passion for the first time, please join us! Wine, warmth, and wonderful company guaranteed!

Secondhandsongs ((free)) Jun 2026

When you navigate the site, you realize that music is essentially a game of Telephone. A folk standard from the 1800s becomes a blues riff in the 1920s, which becomes a rock anthem in the 1970s, which is sampled by a rapper in the 1990s. SecondHandSongs is the phone wire connecting those disparate eras.

Music is a continuous conversation across generations. A melody written in 1930 might become a rock hit in 1970 and a hip-hop sample in 2026. For musicologists, record collectors, and casual trivia fans, tracking these sonic lineages can be incredibly difficult.

The premise is simple but genius: You look up a song. The site tells you:

Beyond standard covers, the site indexes songs that sample older tracks or incorporate them into medleys, providing a complete picture of musical influence.

Make Up Your Mind written by David Quinton - SecondHandSongs

What or era do you want to highlight as an example?

The platform is essential for understanding the shift in how music is valued. Recent academic studies using SecondHandSongs data reveal that 21st-century artists are increasingly covering their contemporaries rather than just the "classics". For example, the database highlights how modern icons like Taylor Swift Justin Bieber Ed Sheeran

captures these moments of cultural transfer. By looking at the "Cover Popularity" index on the site (which compares streaming numbers of originals vs. covers), you can watch history unfold in real-time. For "Tainted Love," the original by Gloria Jones (1964) sits in obscurity, while Soft Cell’s 1981 synth-pop version dominates. For "Respect," Otis Redding wrote it, but Aretha Franklin owns it. The database doesn’t judge which is better—it simply presents the facts. When you navigate the site, you realize that

: It allows users to see how a single track like " I Put a Spell on You " has been interpreted across genres and languages over decades.

Here is a comprehensive look at how SecondHandSongs works, its unique value to music enthusiasts, and why it remains an indispensable resource for digital musicology. What is SecondHandSongs?

A: We don’t judge quality. We only document existence and relationships. Popularity votes are for “is this a real cover?” not “which version is best?”

By stripping away the noise of standard discographies, the site isolates the life cycle of a musical work, mapping how a single melody travels from its originator to dozens of different genres and eras. Key Features and Functional Architecture Music is a continuous conversation across generations

The "original" label is strictly reserved for the first commercially released audio recording of a work, not necessarily the live performance or the writer's demo. Why SecondHandSongs Matters to the Music Industry

One of the most fascinating discoveries on SecondHandSongs is how often the "famous version" is not the original.

: Identifies the "original" performance of a work and lists all known cover versions.

If you are interested in tracing the history of a specific song or exploring how many versions of a classic exist, SecondHandSongs is the premier destination. Cover versions as an impact indicator in popular music
